Podcast #61: Permissive Hypotension

Run Time: 5 minutes3cf03393-2152-4bc2-8791-f61d1c4c463e

Author: Dr. Martin O’Bryan

Educational Pearls:

  • Although ATLS indicates that you should be providing fluids and blood to hypotensive trauma patients to increase blood pressure, the patient has a higher risk of mortality with higher blood pressure.
  • The increase in mortality is due to the dilution of the blood and the increase in the amount of bleeding that can occur.
  • But wait…hypotension is NOT good for head trauma patients as it effects long-term outcomes for these patients.
  • Hypotension can be permitted in trauma patients if the patient has a radial pulse or their systolic pressure is around 80.
