- Benzodiazepine withdrawal and alcohol withdrawal are similar due to their interaction with GABA receptors in the brain except benzodiazepine withdrawals can occur weeks after you stop taking the medication. This is due to the long half-life of certain benzodiazepines.
- Treatment for benzodiazepine withdrawals includes putting the patient back on the same or a different benzodiazepine with future intent of weening them off of the drug.
- Benzodiazepine and alcohol withdrawl are both potentially fatal! Where as other withrawls such as heroine and meth withdrawl may be uncomfortable for patients, but are not life threatening.
